If you want to know what to see in Laos, we will tell you about it in this article.

Without a doubt, Laos is one of the least known countries in Southeast Asia. Perhaps it is because it does not have a coastline, and therefore, it lacks those beaches, it is islands that take your breath away in any other of its neighboring countries. But without a doubt, Laos offers many other things, even islands, that yes fluvial.

We pass ten days in Laos, within a trip that lasted six months through Southeast Asia, in addition to Nepal Y Sri Lanka. And during those days, we tried to see something more of Laos and reach the country by boat. Something symbolic, if we take into account that the mekong river it is one of its main economic sources and infrastructures.

What to see in Laos

We also wanted to enjoy relaxation, away from noise, in its famous 4000 Islands, but we did not want to miss the so-called Pearl of Asia, Luang prabang, nor the festival that was celebrated during those days, that of the end of the rainy season.

Well, if you are planning your trip to Laos, we will tell you below the places we visit and what we find there.

Mekong River

This was one of the best experiences of the trip, since we entered Laos, through this mythical river.

We did it from the Thai city of Chiang khong, to start the tour in Huoeixai. And from there, enjoy unique landscapes for two days. A primary forest, where the hand of man has not yet reached to destroy it.

We made stop at Pakbeng to sleep, and we reached almost Luang prabang.

The good thing about this tour is undoubtedly the continuous landscape, where nature is the only protagonist. We liked sharing that time with other travelers, and without a doubt it is a way to enter Laos, which we think is highly recommended.

You can take a look at the following article, On the way to Laos sailing the Mekong. Here we have in more detail how we did it all, and what the experience was like.

Luang prabang

This city is a true center, both of Buddhism and of the monastic life of the youngest. The orange of their clothes floods the city, well, I would rather say a large town of acceptable size.

Luang Prabang at a glance 8

Luang prabang It is not big, far from it, and it is one of the places where you most want to walk and enjoy the little noise and the little pollution. So, without a doubt, you cannot visit Laos and skip this city.

As in all of Southeast Asia, night markets are part of daily life. And as, Luang Prabang has one of the most beautiful night markets in the region. For my taste, that this night market fits into the street where the Royal Palace, offers you an incredible setting.

Stroll and get lost in Luang Prabang. Get on the Mount Phousi and enjoy incredible views.

And don’t forget to visit the Kuang Si waterfalls, a real wonder where you can take a dip.

Vientiane

The capital of Laos is Vientiane, a small town, where the traffic is somewhat intense, and leaves the mark of pollution.

It is not a place where there is much to see, but it is usually a mandatory stop if you want to go to others.

We spent just one day, and we walked the city. Advice, eat a croissantYou will feel like in a country, but thousands of kilometers further away. Do not forget that this country was a French colony.

4000 Islands

This turned out to be a special place, as well as peaceful and relaxing.

The 4000 Islands, the name seems to be quite an exaggeration if we count the total of islands that there are in that part of the Mekong.

We arrived there without knowing how long we would stay. And the truth is that the plans were perfect to enjoy a place where time passes slowly, and you can enjoy doing little, a lot or nothing.

The 4000 islands

If you go to the 4000 Islands, I advise you to stay in a cabin by the Mekong River. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible. Of course, take mosquito repellent, and do not forget the long sleeves and long pants at dawn and dusk.

We tell you everything you need to know about this place in The 4000 Islands of Laos.
