Kyoto is the cultural capital of Japan and one of the essential stops on any trip to the land of the rising sun. Are you planning a little trip but you are not sure where to look for accommodation? In this article we are going to tell you what they are the best areas to stay in Kyoto, plus a few options for interesting hotels and hostels.
At the end of the article we also include a interactive map with the signposted areas and the location of all these recommendations for accommodation in Kyoto.
For us (and we do not believe we are the only ones) it is the most beautiful area of the city, and where we usually look in the first place. It is known for being the most traditional neighborhood in Kyoto, full of charming streets and houses, where hopefully you can see a Geisha walking fast. Be part of the immense Higashiyama district so if you find something in the surroundings … don’t rule it out either.
The good thing is that there are many accommodations, the bad thing is that they are usually the most expensive in the city … But all is not lost, you can always find some specific offers for around € 80/100, if you have the budget, don’t do it! hesitate! It is the best area to stay in Kyoto.
Around the train station
It is the best option for those looking for good value for money and especially for those who intend to base themselves in Kyoto and do excursions during the day (to Nara, Osaka, Himeji…).
Also to discover the city: most of the urban buses that you will need to visit the best temples in Kyoto and the rest of its attractions pass through here. The area is safe, fairly central, and accommodations are affordable.
North of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple
In the immense Shimogyo Ward neighborhood, which extends to the north of the train station, there is a lot of interesting accommodation offer. But in order not to stay too far away, we would tell you to look north of the Higashi Hongan-ji and Nishi Hongan-ji temples, which are also one of the most beautiful in Kyoto. It is where we stayed on our first trip, specifically the Kazariya GH which we highly recommend.
The position is strategic, being close to the station (we walked to the accommodation), but also relatively close to the most interesting neighborhoods in Kyoto such as Gion, or the Nishiki Market.
The entire area that extends around the immense Kawaramachi avenue It is a good place to look (and find) accommodation in Kyoto. The best thing about the location is that you can visit almost all the tourist spots in the center on foot, so logistically it is a success. Around here you will find, for example, the Nishiki market, the Imperial Palace or the Nijo Castle.
It is a very lively commercial area, with many cafes and restaurants, so you will not get bored. For us, one of the best areas to stay in Kyoto without a doubt.
Best hostels in Kyoto
For those travelers who travel alone and want to share their days with other people from all over the world, nothing better than staying in a hostel! And also to save a little money, of course! These are the best hostels in Kyoto:
